Ian Fowles: The Homemade “Champ” Head

Written by on October 13, 2015

Ian Fowles

Ian Fowles, guitarist for the Aquabats and Gerard Way’s band, loves customizing his instruments, and we’ve seen him do so on a special Kurt Cobain Jaguar and a Telecaster that bears a special color he calls “Fry Sauce.”

Another one of Fowles’ favorite personal projects is a completely homemade Fender Champ head. For those that think this is a Fender Super Champ X-2 HD head, they’d be wrong.

Fowles actually came up with the idea after taking the speaker out of one of his older Champ combo amps and putting it into a 2×12 cabinet.

“The tone just opened up for me. It was like a whole new amp,” Fowles said. “So I thought, ‘Why don’t I just make the Champ into a head?’”

Learn more about this amazing modification in the video below.

I’ve seen a lot of mods in my time. This is a good one.

  • Martin Martin

I put a 5f1 chassis in a Deluxe sized pine cabinet with a 12″ WGS Veteran 30 …. it kills ! Why Mark Baier at Victoria Amps is the only guy building these things is beyond me . I’ve also seen the 65′ Deluxe Reverb RI made into a head paired to a 4 x 12 cab . and that too becomes another animal .
